The 2020 Carlsbad 5000 Presented by National University is Going Virtual
Posted Wednesday, July 29
Since our postponement announcement in March, we have been cautiously optimistic that a live race in September could roll out with the same magic that the World’s Fastest 5K has experienced since 1986. Unfortunately, COVID-19 continues to significantly impact the world in profound ways, and based on the guidance of state and local officials, it is simply not possible to ensure the health and well-being of all participants, volunteers, and community members by hosting a traditional event this year. There is nothing we wanted more than to celebrate our 35th year on the streets of Carlsbad with each and every one of you but we’ll instead do our best to provide an exciting and memorable virtual experience during these challenging times.
Race Virtually Between September 14-20
We encourage you to complete your race by running or walking your favorite socially distanced route between September 14-20. The virtual race includes an easy-to-use digital results leaderboard for runners to share their race stats and keep the competitive spirit of Carlsbad 5000 alive! This year’s race kits include the 2020 race shirt, finisher medal, race bib, and awesome swag from our event sponsors! Race kits will be mailed at no additional cost to all US participants beginning August 31. There are also exciting giveaways planned for participants from our generous sponsors. Details on how to enter to win and how to upload your finish times will be emailed in the coming weeks. Plus, stay tuned for updates regarding the Skechers Performance Elite Invitational races!
All 2020 registrations will be automatically switched to the virtual race and no further action is needed to confirm this change. We kindly ask that if your mailing address has changed since you registered, please update your order by August 24 by following the steps outlined here so that we can ensure your race kit delivers to you.
Please note that per our Cancellations and Refunds Policy agreed to during registration, we will not be issuing refunds. Given the uncertainty around when California will enter Phase 4 of reopening communities and allowing mass gatherings, we are unable to offer deferrals. We simply do not know what the future holds for running events next year and beyond.
Finally, we want to extend a heartfelt and resounding thank you to everyone who continues to support the Carlsbad 5000, as well as the running community as a whole.
If you have any unanswered questions, please see our FAQs.

Carlsbad 5000 Officially Rescheduled for September 19-20, 2020
Posted Thursday, March 12
As many of you are likely aware, Governor Gavin Newsom announced overnight that California public health officials issued a policy stating non-essential gatherings over 250 people be postponed or canceled across the state until at least the end of March. Additionally, the County of San Diego has issued a legal order prohibiting all large gatherings. Well friends, with over 6,000 participants from around the world, that certainly includes the Carlsbad 5000.
Our team cares deeply about this event and we’ve been working closely with the city of Carlsbad on contingency plans since the beginning of this outbreak to ensure this race can take place when it is safe to do so. Our hope was to avoid a complete cancellation of the event and we are pleased to announce that we have officially secured a new date for this year’s race! The 2020 Carlsbad 5000 will now take place the weekend of September 19-20.
We are passionate runners ourselves and understand the current uncertainty and desire for immediate answers. Therefore, we are offering all registered participants the following options at no additional cost:
JOIN US IN SEPTEMBER!
- Option 1: If you are able to participate in the rescheduled 2020 race on September 19-20 then there are no additional steps or actions needed from you. Your registration remains valid and your race bib will be ready and waiting!
RUN VIRTUALLY OR DEFER ENTRY TO 2021
We are pleased to offer two additional options, at no cost, if you are unable to join us in September.
- Option 2: Switch to the Virtual Race: Registration for the Virtual Race option closes March 22. Shirts and medals will be mailed beginning the week of March 30. To switch your registration to the Virtual Race, simply follow the steps outlined here and select “Virtual Race” as your ticket type.
- Option 3: Defer Entry to the 2021 race scheduled for April 10-11, 2021: To switch your registration to the 2021 race, follow the steps outlined here and select “Defer Entry to 2021” as your ticket type. You will receive a confirmation email indicating your choice to defer. An additional email will be sent on April 1, 2020 with an invitation for you to complete your guaranteed entry into the 2021 race.
**Please visit Events.com to complete the Virtual Race and Deferral registration options. Participants have through March 22, 2020 to select from the options above. If no action has been taken by this date, your registration will default to the rescheduled 2020 race. Please note that per our Cancellations and Refunds Policy, we will not be issuing refunds.**
Last-minute changes are never easy and we are grateful for your patience and understanding as our team works to make this process as painless as possible for everyone.
We wish you all good health in the coming weeks and months ahead.

Update Regarding Coronavirus
Posted Wednesday, March 11
As of today, the Carlsbad 5000 is still scheduled to take place on March 21-22.
Our team is working closely with the city of Carlsbad and following the guidance of public health officials. The current assessment from the California Department of Health is that the health risk from COVID-19 to the general public remains low at this time. However, we understand this is an evolving situation and should the local government order the canceling of mass gatherings prior to race weekend, we will immediately communicate next steps to all participants, volunteers, and partners via email and social channels.
We’re also sensitive to the fact that some individuals may wish to no longer participate in this year’s event and are offering the option to switch to our Virtual Run at no additional cost. Shirts and medals will be mailed beginning the week of March 23. [wp-svg-icons icon=”info” wrap=”i”] Follow these steps to switch to the Virtual Run option.
If you are sick or experiencing symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath) or have traveled to a country on the CDC travel notice, we ask that you please do not attend the event and instead participate virtually.
For those planning to join us this year, we ask that you please follow the CDC’s everyday preventative actions, including:
* Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
* Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
* Clean frequently touched surfaces and objects daily.
* Minimize close contact (e.g. no handshakes or hugging)
* Stay home if you are sick or experiencing symptoms of fever, cough, or shortness of breath.
To assist with these preventative actions, we will be increasing the number of hand washing / sanitation stations and cleaning commonly used surfaces more frequently, particularly in the expo and finisher festival area. Tissues and trash cans will also be readily available.
